The Lettering Arts Trust

Scribblers is committed to developing the traditional art of calligraphy.  So we are delighted, therefore, to support the Lettering Arts Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting the lettering arts, from calligraphy to letter carving.

This year the Lettering Arts Trust marks its 30th anniversary.  They are the only organisation dedicated to championing Britain’s rich heritage in the art of lettering, in particular, letter carving. They work to raise awareness of the art form and ensure that the role of the master craftsman and our rich heritage is valued.

Sarah Harrison of the Lettering Arts Trust says, “We are the UK’s leading voice for promoting lettering to public and professional audiences.  Based at Snape Maltings, our permanent gallery showcases the work of renowned lettering artists, while our shop is filled with lettering-related gifts. Our inspiring gallery is also the venue for our one-day calligraphy and lino cut workshops taught by leading artists.  We bring the finest artists and the public together through training programmes and apprenticeships, events and exhibitions, and original commissions.

The Lettering Arts Trust is one of the major providers of training in letter carving and drawing, through their apprenticeship and journeyman schemes and a range of workshops held across the country in artists’ studios. These workshops enable people to learn the art of letter design and carving from the UK’s most talented makers.

Calligraphy Artwork

It is a custodian of the ‘Art & Memory’ Collection – contemporary lettered works held at various historic sites around the country – including Blair Castle and Canterbury Cathedral.

The charity manages a commissioning service which helps the public to commission works of lettering from skilled artists across the UK, whether a beautiful memorial or a gift for a wedding.

“Our goal is to ensure that the lettering arts are practised, not endangered. Why not visit our gallery at Snape Maltings or our website to find out more?” says Sarah Harrison.
