What’s the difference between Calligraphy and Handwriting?

Have you ever wondered whether calligraphy and handwriting are the same? It’s a question we get asked, and while they might look similar at first glance, they have very different purposes and techniques.

We’ve been asked this a few times. On the surface, they can look quite similar. But they are very different.

Calligraphy: The Art of Beautiful Writing

Calligraphy isn’t about jotting down a to-do or shopping list (although wouldn’t that be lovely to look at? And it would be a great way of getting some calligraphy practise into everyday activities).

It’s about creating something special. Something decorative. Something that takes a bit of effort and a lot of patience. It’s beautiful, deliberate, and designed to be admired - the kind of thing you’d see on a wedding invitation or a certificate.

To do calligraphy, you need a few specific tools: dip pens, or nibs with certain characteristics that make them suitable for a particular calligraphy style, special inks and paper. You also need time – it’s not the sort of thing you can rush.

Calligraphy letters and words are ‘constructed’. Each letter is built up from basic straight and curved pen strokes. The letters of the alphabet have different widths. The letters can be group according to these characteristics.

Handwriting: Your Everyday Companion

Handwriting, on the other hand, is functional. It’s quick, it’s personal, and it’s a reflection of who you are. Handwriting is like a fingerprint – unique to you and a reflection of your personality.

Most of us learn it in school, and it sticks with us for life. It’s not about making it perfect; it’s about getting your thoughts down on paper, whether that’s in a diary, a note, or that shopping list.

The interesting thing is that calligraphy and handwriting can influence each other. Spend some time on calligraphy, and you might find your handwriting gets neater (and maybe even prettier). And if you’ve already got decent handwriting, you’re off to a good start when it comes to learning calligraphy.
