Geo. W. Hughes Flexible Nib Selection

Three flexible pointed nibs from Geo. W. Hughes, each with a name worth a second look.

In 1901, John Hewett ordered a gross of Hughes’s Golden Shoulder Pens and added, in his own hand: “they are the best pens I ever used in my life! and I am over 75.” His note is still folded inside one of the Hughes boxes in the archive. The Golden Shoulder Pen is in this set.

The Local Government Pen reflects the way Hughes sold. More and more pens were being bought in bulk by education departments, railway companies and large businesses, and a name like this told the buyer exactly whose desk the pen was made for.

The Devil’s Own is harder to place. Where its name came from isn’t yet known.

All three are pointed and flexible. Two are plain steel; the Golden Shoulder Pen has a gold finish. Each nib has been checked from the archive.

This is a small selection, limited by what the archive currently holds of each. Once a particular nib is exhausted, it may not return in the same form.

Included in this set:

Geo. W. Hughes - Devil’s Own 384
