Two areas have been cut away making a slightly flatter shape. This is where your thumb and forefinger go to hold the pen holder. The shape allows for more of your finger and thumb to be in contact with the pen holder, which makes it more comfortable to hold.

I've always struggled with calligraphy...saw this set of 2 pens to help my grip (basically loosen it!!!) and, with practice, I'm improving...finally! Definitely worth giving them a go...

For me, these pens are not right. The ergonomic shaping are not comfortable and it seems to make the nib slant in the wrong angle. I'm left handed, so not sure if that makes a difference?
I do however, like the look of them. If they were made without the ergonomic shaping, for me, they would be perfect! Nicely made, but sadly I won't be using them
