Geo. W. Hughes Football Collection

Five vintage Football Pens from Geo. W. Hughes, a turned-up tip in five breadths.

The last release was built around the turned-up tip, the small upward curve that lets a nib glide across the paper rather than catch on the upstroke. The Football Pen is Geo. W. Hughes’s version, and like the “Ajusto”, it was one of the Hughes pens that caught the attention of Alfred Fairbank.

It is a straight and rigid nib, with no give under pressure. Hughes made it in five breadths, numbered 1 to 5, and each carries his “Registered” mark. This set brings all five together, from the 1321 to the 1325, so the same design can be tried at every width.

Each nib has been checked from the archive. The number of complete sets is limited by the scarcest breadth, and once a particular breadth is exhausted, the set may not return in the same form.
